School of Astrophysics "Francesco Lucchin" X Cycle, III Course - Bertinoro, May 24-29, 2009 Cosmological backgrounds - Statistical methods for Astrophysics web page: http://www.bo.astro.it/~school09/ This is the first announcement of the School of Astrophysics "F. Lucchin" for PhD to be held in Bertinoro (FC) during the week May 24-29, 2009. AIMS OF THE SCHOOL The School of Astrophysics "F. Lucchin" is adressed to PhD students in Astronomy and Physics and it is open also to interested young researchers. The aim of the school is to contribute to their qualification and provide a common cultural baseline on hot topics of international research, both observational and theoretical. The school is two-years long, being comprised of 4 courses of 1 week each, for a total amount of 120 hours of lectures. Each course is about 2 topics, possibly not closely connected. The courses will be held in centres placed in the neighbourhood of different Astronomical Observatories and/or Universities to facilitate the interaction between students and the local astronomical research groups. TOPICS AND SPEAKERS The scientific organizing committee has chosen for the school the following topics: 1. Cosmological backgrounds Director: Gianfranco De Zotti (INAF - Padova Astronomical Observatory) - Nicola Vittorio (University of Roma Tor Vergata) CMB temperature and polarization anisotropies - Carlo Baccigalupi (SISSA Trieste) CMB, foregrounds, and component separation - Lauro Moscardini (University of Bologna) SZ effect - Amedeo Balbi (University of Roma Tor Vergata) Cosmological information from large-scale structure - Stefano Cristiani (INAF - Trieste Astronomical Observatory) UV background, IGM and reionization 2. Statistical methods for astrophysics Director: Gianni Zamorani (INAF - Bologna Astronomical Observatory) - Jasper Wall (University British Columbia) Statistics in astronomy - Alan Heavens (University of Edinburgh) Statistical techniques in cosmology - Cristiano Porciani (University of Bonn) Advanced statistical techniques with astrophysical applications There will be the possibility for the students to present their scientific activity in short talks. REGISTRATIONS AND DEADLINES The deadline for the registration is *April 20th 2009*. It is possible to apply either using the on-line registration form at http://www.bo.astro.it/~school09 or sending the form by email to school09@oabo.inaf.it or by fax at the number +39 051 2095700 (though e-mail or the on-line form are strongly recommended). Applicants will receive an email confirming their registration. For practical reasons the maximum number of participants will be 60. In case more people apply, priority will be given to PhD students. The final list of participants will be given by April 25th 2009. Participants will have to confirm by April 30th 2006 that they will attend the school. The school fee is 300 euro, including accommodation, breakfast and lunch at the Centro Congressi, social dinner, meal tickets to have dinner in Bertinoro's restaurants and trattorie and bus transport from/to Bologna. Extra 50 euro are required for single room accommodation (note that the number of single rooms is limited) or for an extra night (for people leaving on Saturday). The fee can be paid cash or by credit card at the reception desk of the school. A few grants might be available to partially cover the school fee: applicants should mark the request in the registration form and send a short CV to the school organization.
