SHINING is a ~200 hrs guaranteed time project to observe a sample of local infrared luminous galaxies with the PACS spectrometer on board of Herschel. Most of the galaxies were observed in the main atomic FIR fine structure lines tracing ionized and neutral gas and in some molecular lines. I will review some of the main results obtained from this project, that include the first discovery of very massive molecular outflows in ULIRGs, the detailed study of the starburst outflows in M82, the [CII] content of galaxies in the context of the galaxy evolution, and I will show how the observation of very high (J=15-40) CO lines in the FIR are crucial in disentangling the various molecular gas phases and the related different excitation processes.
