The general properties of stellar jets and of their environment will be briefly outlined, 
constraining the physical jet parameters from emission line observations. 
The problem of the jet origin will be then addressed, discussing some analytical and 
numerical models of jet acceleration and comparing the results
of the modelling with observations.
