Virgo and LIGO detectors have concluded in September 2007 a joint science run, and are currently being upgraded, with the plan to restart science data acquisition during 2009. This is the first stage in a program of sensitivity improvements, interleaved with science runs, that will eventually increase the volume observed by gravitational wave detectors by a factor roughly 1000. In this seminar, the current scientific results will be reviewed, the science case for the future evolution of the detectors will be presented and the opportunities for multi-messenger observations will be discussed.
