VVDS Photometric Stellar Masses Working Group

RESULTS:

Using the  method described here

Sample:    VVDS K-band subsample KAB < 23.5     N=835 gal.  area=~166 arcmin^2

Mass vs. redshift in VVDS sample:

Comparison to K20 sample

Massz_K20Massz_VVDS

Note the presence of massive galaxies (Mass>10^11 Msun) at z>0.8.

Mass Function:

MF_4bin0

caption: Red triangles = local Mass function by Cole et al. 2000
Blue squares = Mass function of K20 survey (Fontana et al. 2004)
Black circles = VVDS Mass function

Good agreement with K20 survey but extended 1-1.5 mag. fainter (i.e. less massive galaxies)
Confirm the small evolution up to z=2 of massive galaxies
Found a mass dependent evolution,  lower mass galaxies decrease in number faster than massive galaxies

Sample:    VVDS I-band sample IAB < 24.0     N=~6400 gal.  area=~1750 arcmin^2

Mass vs. redshift and Mass Function:

Massz_I24MF_I24

Similar results obtained with VVDS K-selected subsample (see above).
