The foundation of the library, which is specialized in astronomy and astrophysics, can be traced back to the beginning of the XVIII century when the Specola di Bologna was founded by Eustachio Manfredi. Today the library is a part of both of the main Italian online library catalogues, ACNP (for serials; a subsection for astronomy libraries is provided) and SBN (for books). In 1999 the library moved into the new premises of via Ranzani, 1.
The reading rooms have 17 places for readers and 2 personal computers for bibliographic research; wireless access to the web is available to institutional users upon request, in the reading rooms.
The library is mainly
destinated to the bolognese astronomers and to the students of the
local degree
courses in Physics and in Astronomy, but also counts among
its users
amateur astronomers, school teachers and other scholars, like for
example physicists, historians and philosophers of science.
Scholars from other centers of the Italian National
Institute of Astrophysics (INAF) and students from other scientific
Departments of
the University
of Bologna are welcome.
The library book heritage consists of an antique section (2,500 volumes printed after 1488) and of a modern one, which is composed of ~7,000 volumes, property of both the University of Bologna and INAF - Bologna Astrophysical Observatory (see the local book online catalogue). About 900 journals and serial publications of Observatories from all over the world - current and ceased ones (search the online catalogue) - and 2,000 slides complete the library heritage.

from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m
